A short guide

New or factory refurbished?

Both can be the right choice. The difference is age, price and warranty, not whether the server works.

New

The current generation, straight from the manufacturer, with the manufacturer's warranty and support options. Best for systems you will run for five years or more, and where a tender or policy asks for new equipment.

Factory refurbished

Usually a recent generation, returned from a lease or a data centre. A specialist refurbisher tests every part, replaces what is worn, cleans it and resets it. It often costs a fraction of the new price, which can pay for more memory, better drives or a second server for backups.

What the words mean

Grades A, B and C

Refurbished grades describe how the case looks, not how well it works: A is close to new, B has light marks, C has visible wear. Every grade we sell should have passed the same tests.

Who gives the warranty

New servers carry the manufacturer's warranty. Refurbished ones are usually covered by the refurbisher, and sometimes by us; each listing says who, for how long, and whether repairs are on site or the part is sent back.

1U, 2U or tower

Rack servers (1U is about 4.4 cm high) fit a server cabinet with others. 2U holds more drives and cools more quietly. A tower stands on its own, which suits a small office without a rack.

RAID and drives

A RAID controller spreads data over several drives, so one can fail without losing data. RAID 1 mirrors two drives; RAID 10 and RAID 6 suit larger systems. RAID is not a backup: keep a copy elsewhere too.

Remote management

iDRAC (Dell), iLO (HPE) and XClarity (Lenovo) let an engineer see and restart a server over the network, even when it is switched off. It makes support from Kumasi or Accra quick wherever you are.

Redundant power

Two power supplies keep a server running if one fails. Connect each to a UPS, and add voltage protection: in Ghana, outages and voltage swings cause more server failures than age does.

Sizing

How big a server do you need?

A rough guide to start the conversation. We size every quotation for your users, data and growth.

  • Small office or clinic (files, printing, accounting, up to about 25 users): a tower or 1U server with one processor, 32–64 GB of memory and two mirrored SSDs.
  • Hospital or bank branch systems (a hospital management system, databases, 25–150 users): a 1U or 2U server with two processors, 64–256 GB of memory, RAID 10 or RAID 6 on SSDs and redundant power.
  • Several systems on one machine (virtualisation with Hyper-V, Proxmox or VMware): plenty of memory first, then processor cores; plan a second server or a backup appliance so one failure doesn't stop everything.
  • Backups and file archives: a 2U server with many large drives, kept in a different room or building from the main server where possible.
More than the box

Delivered, installed and looked after

Our engineers install the server in your rack or office, set up the RAID, the operating system, backups and remote management, and connect it to your network and UPS.

We support what we install, on site in Kumasi and Accra and remotely anywhere, with optional support plans and response times agreed in writing. See our hospital IT and banking work.

Your data, safely

Refurbished servers should arrive with their drives securely wiped by the refurbisher. For systems that hold patient or customer records, we recommend new drives in a refurbished server. When you replace an old server, we can wipe or destroy its drives so the data can't be recovered, in line with your duties under Ghana's Data Protection Act.

Are refurbished servers reliable?

Generally yes, when they come from a specialist refurbisher that tests and replaces worn parts. Servers are built to run for many years; most failures come from drives, fans and power supplies, which are the parts refurbishers check and replace. Use RAID, redundant power and backups with any server, new or refurbished.

Do prices include VAT?

Prices are shown before VAT, NHIL and GETFund, with the total including them underneath. Your quotation and invoice show each one separately at the rates in force at the time.

How long does delivery take?

Servers in stock can usually be delivered within a few days in Kumasi and Accra, and soon after elsewhere in Ghana. Servers to order show an estimate in days; your quotation confirms the date.

Can you change the configuration?

Yes. Memory, drives, network cards and power supplies can usually be added or changed. Tell us what the server will run and we will quote the configuration that fits.

Do you deliver outside Ghana?

We supply and support organisations in neighbouring countries too. Shipping, import duties and taxes there depend on the country, so we quote each case separately.
